VIDEO: THE BERLIN FILE KOREAN MOVIE A MUST WATCH

The Korean movie industry seems to have to have found its next mega-hit. The action blockbuster “The Berlin File,” compared by local critics to the Jason Bourne movies, drew more than 2.24 million viewers in five days after opening, thanks to the 1.53 million tickets sold during the weekend alone.

Despite moviegoers flocking to the new release, “A Gift from Room 7,” is showing staying power in the box office standings. The comedy that follows the story of an intellectually-challenged man wrongfully imprisoned for murder and his interaction with the inmates, garnered 4.2 million viewers in its first 12 days of release. It finished second behind “Berlin” over the weekend after 1.36 million watched it.

“Berlin” is a spy flick directed by martial arts devotee Ryu Seung-wan and features an A-list cast led by Han Seok-gyu, Ha Jung-woo, Jeon Ji-hyun and Ryu Seung-beom, the younger brother of the director.

The early audience figures has producers wondering whether the attendance records held by 2006 hit “The Host” could be within striking distance.

“Berlin” and “A Gift from Room 7” accounted for more than 80 percent of all tickets sold at 897 cinemas across the nation on the weekend, the Korean Film Council said.

The Korean film sector is coming off a record year when it sold nearly 200 million tickets. Movies have been emerging as a key consumption area during the economic downturn as consumers look for cheaper ways to spend their leisure time.

JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE REWRITE

The future of Warner Bros.' big screen superhero ensemble Justice League appears to be a bit up in the air today as Badass Digest reports the rumor that the studio has elected not to move forward with Will Beall's take on the screenplay and will now bring in new writers to reexamine the property.

Although the film was initially rumored for a 2015 release, recent reports from Warner Bros. suggest that Justice League's big screen potential hinges on the success of their upcoming Man of Steel. Unofficial buzz about the Zack Snyder film has been very postive, however, and it's possible that, if rumors of a page-one rewrite do pan out, the reason is simply to make the ensemble fit more in tone with Snyder's vision.

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Russell Crowe, Michael Kelly, Harry Lennix and Richard Schiff and hits theaters on June 14.

DAKOTA FANNING AND DANIELLE MCDONALD JOIN EVERY SECRET THING

Likely Story, Merced Media Partners, Palmstar Media Capital, and Hyde Park International have announced that Dakota Fanning and Danielle Macdonald have been added to the cast of Amy Berg’s Every Secret Thing, joining the previously announced Diane Lane and Elizabeth Banks.

The story follows two 11-year-old girls who are convicted of murdering a baby and are incarcerated until they turn 18. Upon their release, children start to go missing; as the police turn their attention to the duo, the mystery surrounding the original murder comes back to light.

Fanning and Macdonald will play the 18-year old girls, and Lane will play the mother of one of the girls, portraying a woman who has long known that her daughter is a gifted liar. Banks plays the lead police officer who finds herself emotionally involved in the case.

Berg, who directed the critically acclaimed documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and West of Memphis, is set to make her narrative helming debut.

Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman is producing with Frances McDormand. Executive producers are Palmstar’s Kevin Frakes, Merced Media’s Raj Singh and Stuart Brown, Hyde Park’s Ashok Amritraj, Likely Story’s Stefanie Azpiazu, and Michael Bederman.

Principal Photography begins March 25th in New York with Berg directing from a script by Nicole Holofcener, adapted from Laura Lippman’s 2004 novel.

Pre-production had begun by April 2011, and principal photography began in London, England in July 2012. Filming locations also include the Canary Islands, Scotland, and Los Angeles. The film is scheduled for release on May 24, 2013.

Premise

After the events of Fast Five, professional criminal Dominic Toretto and his crew are wealthy, but their criminal records prevent them from returning to their home country. Following his attempts to apprehend them, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs offers the crew a deal; he will give them all full pardons for their crimes if they help him take down a lethally skilled mercenary organisation led by a criminal mastermind and his ruthless second-in-command, Dominic's thought-dead lover Letty Ortiz.[2]

Development

In February 2010, Diesel confirmed that production of Fast Five was commencing and also announced that a sixth installment was being planned.[12] In January 2011, producer Neal H. Moritz said more:[13]
In Vin and my mind we already know what the sixth movie is, we’ve already been talking about it. Vin and I have had numerous conversations about what that might be. And we’re starting to get serious about it right now. We just finished [Fast Five] like 4 or 5 weeks ago and we just needed a break, and now we’re gonna start focusing on that.
In April 2011 it was confirmed that Chris Morgan had already begun work on a script for a potential sixth film at the behest of Universal Studios.[4] It was also confirmed that Universal intended to transform the series from street-racing action into a series of heist films with car chases in the vein of The Italian Job (1969) and The French Connection (1971), with Fast Five as the transitional movie.[4] Universal chairman Adam Fogelson said:[4]
The question putting Fast Five and Fast Six together for us was: Can we take it out of being a pure car culture movie and into being a true action franchise in the spirit of those great heist films made 10 or 15 years ago?
Fogelson said that the racing aspect had put a "ceiling" on the number of people willing to see films in the series, and that, by turning it into a series where car driving ability is just one aspect of the film, he hoped to increase the series' audience.[4] On Johnson's character, Fogelson added "[Johnson] also wants to appear in and be integral to the action in Fast Six."[4]
On June 24, 2011, Universal Pictures announced that the anticipated sequel is scheduled for release on May 24, 2013.[14] Moritz and Diesel are to return as producers and Lin returns to direct.[14] In an interview with Box Office, Lin revealed that he had, after discussions with Diesel, storyboarded, previsualized and edited a twelve-minute finale for Fast Six before filming was completed on Fast Five. Lin said he shot the footage as he was unsure at the time if there would be a sequel or if he would be able to direct it, but he wanted to have input on how any sequel would end.[15] On October 21, 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that Universal was considering filming two sequels—Fast Six and Fast Sevenback to back with a single story running through both films; both written by Morgan and directed by Lin.[16] On December 20, 2011, Diesel confirmed that Fast Six would be split into two parts, with writing for the two films occurring simultaneously. On the decision, Diesel said:[17]
We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages...The studio said, 'You can't fit all that story in one damn movie!'[17]
On April 23, 2012, it was announced that mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano was in negotiations to play a member of Hobbs' team.[11] On May 1, 2012, Michelle Rodriguez was confirmed to be reprising her role as Letty Ortiz,[3] and it was announced that Welsh actor Luke Evans had been offered a role as a villain.[10] Evans was confirmed to join the cast on May 9, 2012, portraying the leader of a heist gang competing with Diesel's crew over the same heist job.[18] On July 27, 2012, Joe Taslim was confirmed to star as the villain Jah.[1] On February 15, 2012, Johnson confirmed that Fast Six would begin filming in May 2012, with some of the production to take place in the United Kingdom and Germany. Johnson stated that the two intended sequels would no longer be filmed simultaneously because of weather issues in filming locations, and that production on Fast Seven would only begin after the completion of Fast Six.[19]However, filming did not officially begin until July 30, 2012.[20] In February 2013, it was confirmed that the film would be titled Fast & Furious 6.[21]

Principal photography

Filming began on July 30, 2012, in London, England,[20][22][23] and Shepperton Studios in Surrey, part of the Pinewood Studiosgroup.[24] Lin was unable to obtain permission to shoot an action sequence at Piccadilly Circus involving an exploding oil tanker, and so a replica of the landmark was built at Shepperton.[25] The London shoot including filming on Lambeth Bridge.[26] On October 11, 2012, Walker suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a stunt, requiring the production to film around his scenes until he recovered.[27] A scene involving a plane crash began filming at RAF BovingdonHertfordshire on October 30, 2012 and was scheduled to conclude on November 9.[28] Filming for a car chase scene took place on Dale Street in Liverpool City Centre, and the Queensway Tunnel in the nearby town of Birkenhead between November 12-15, 2012.[29][30]
Shooting also occurred on Spain's Canary Islands including the island of Tenerife. Filming had been intended to take place in Marseille, France, but was relocated to the islands to take advantage of a larger tax rebate (38%) that was estimated to lower filming costs by $20 million.[31]
Stunt and car chase scenes began filming on location in Glasgow, Scotland on August 29, 2012, and were scheduled to conclude on September 16, 2012. The shoot took place entirely at night and involved approximately 250 crew, but none of the central cast. Sets were built on site for the scenes including a large car showroom.[32][33] Filming was scheduled to take place at the former Royal Air Force base RAF Bentwaters in late August 2012 until early September 2012.[34] Filming also took place in Echo Park, Los Angelesbeginning on December 1, 2012. The shoot returned the series to the filming location of the original The Fast and the Furious, and required the garage setting of that film to be rebuilt by carpenters.[35] By December 17, 2012, it was reported that filming had concluded.[36]

World War Z

We got a sneak peek into Brad Pitt's upcoming post-apocalyptic horror movie "World War Z" in a gray-hued, fast-paced trailer that aired shortly before the start of the 2013 Super Bowl.
As The Huffington Post noted in an earlier post, the trailer, featuring a long-haired Pitt, "shows off the zombie apocalypse ('We've lost the East Coast') without actually showing off the zombie apocalypse."
Are you planning on watching this film when it hits theaters this summer? The reactions on Twitter seemed mixed.

In that World War Z trailer, why are they saving the U.S. Constitution? Do zombies eat historical documents now?

That World War Z commercial with Brad threw me. When it started I thought they'd re-edited the Chanel spot.

Sean Bean Joins Jupiter Ascending

Sean Bean is the latest name to join the cast of Andy and Lana Wachowski's Jupiter AscendingDeadline reports. He'll star in the sci-fi tale opposite Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis and Eddie Redmayne.

The film focuses on higher forms of life who are watching us from other worlds. Kunis will play a Russian immigrant who is busily scrubbing toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she actually possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to herself.

In a universe where humans are near the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, a young destitute human woman is targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe because her very existence threatens to end the Queen's reign.

Stand-Alone Star Wars Films Confirmed

Late last night news broke that the first standalone Star Wars film might be centered around Yoda, but obviously Iger didn’t address that rumor.  It is encouraging that Kasdan—who co-wroteEmpire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi—is involved in these other Star Wars films, but I for one am sincerely hoping that the Yoda rumor remains just a rumor.  Disney has a major opportunity to expand the Star Wars universe with new and interesting characters; we’ve gotten to know Yoda over five films already, so I’m eager to see something more fresh or exciting.

"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films," Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin (via Variety). "Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we plan to make Star Wars VIIVIII and IXover roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as FelicityAliasLost and Fringe.
